–Magnus about his magic and life, This World Inverted

Magnus Bane is a warlock who no longer practices magic in a dimension where demons no longer exist.

History[]

With the need for magic gone in the world, Magnus retired as a warlock, and his magic became dormant. He opened up a shop and bought airtime for a TV commercial to promote his psychic business. Former customers Hodge and Luke vouched for him, demonstrating his advising skills.

When Clary, an alternate version of the Clary in their dimension, saw his commercial on TV, she rushed over to his shop. Magnus gave her a tarot reading, telling her that her relationship with her beloved would take a turn that evening. They were interrupted by his cat, Chairman Meow, after which Clary finally revealed what she really came for: she was a Shadowhunter and needed his magic to find the Portal in that dimension before she could be assimilated into their world.

With Clary's help and to help her, he agreed to wake his dormant magic, though it was initially weak. This was enough, however, to track the Portal, through Clary's shard, to the subbasement of New York Institute. Because Clary has access to the Institute, she invited him to the party being held there that night so they could continue their search for the Portal. Clary wasn't able to secure his entry into the event, however, so Magnus was stopped at the entrance by Raj. Alec spotted them and let Magnus in.

Alec showed immediate interest and flirted with Magnus, but Magnus was too focused on his mission with Clary to mind that when he spotted Clary, he left Alec to talk to her. Clary had begun to lose herself to that dimension's Clary, so Magnus showed her his magic to make her return to her senses. Together, they went into the Institute's basement, where they were attacked by a Ravener demon—that dimension's first demon in a long time. Jace Wayland of the other dimension arrived and took over the body of that dimension's Jace, and Clary and Jace killed the demon together. Magnus eventually found the Portal, which he was able to open, with Clary's shard and his magic, so Clary and Jace could Portal back to their dimension, to Valentine's lair.

Jace told Magnus to destroy the Portal behind them to secure their world from further demon invasions. As Clary left to her world, Magnus thanked her for giving him his life back.

Personality[]

Magnus is reserved, though still quite witty at times.

Physical appearance[]

Unlike his dimensional counterpart, this Magnus prefers conservative clothing; his hair is styled down, brushed to the side in an almost formal manner, and he wears no makeup or jewelry.

Skills and abilities[]

  • Immortality: As a warlock, Magnus has been granted immortality. Physically, Magnus does not age and has maintained the appearance of a young man for centuries.
  • Magic: Magnus has access to magical powers that went dormant for a time after years of inactivity as a warlock.
    • Portal Opening: Magnus can open portals or a dimensional doorway that can be used as a means for rapid travel all over the world. He was able to reconstruct a shattered portal to another universe.
    • Image Projection: While trying to jog Clary's memory, he generated various images hovering above his hand including two cats and a runic symbol.
