My Bubbie Helen always says there are no handouts in life, that everything comes with a price.

Simon about Helen, Mea Maxima Culpa

Helen is the grandmother of Rebecca and Simon Lewis.

History

When she was young, her family owned a bakery in Poland during WWII. She witnessed soldiers "ask" to put a star on their bakery's window to signify that theirs was a Jewish-run shop. She witnessed more difficult times, when they were told to wear white armbands, forbidden from riding trains, and then forced to get on trains and onto camps. Helen was the only one in her family to survive.

Helen eventually had a family, had a daughter named Elaine, who went on to give her two grandchildren, and a grandson named Simon who affectionately called her "Bubbie Helen".[1]

For the Yom Kippur dinner in 2016, Helen flew to New York to celebrate with her family. Helen was disappointed that Simon did not attend the Temple service and stated that she won't wait for Simon for dinner if he was late. When he did arrive, it was with Maia Roberts, who was introduced to them as Simon's girlfriend. Though Helen inquired about Maia's religion, the girl's charm made her likable enough to Helen.[2]
