The Lightwood family ruby is a Lightwood family heirloom. It is a four-karat, unheated Burmese ruby,[1] charmed to pulse and glow in the presence of demons.

History[]

The ruby, shaped into a small rectangle and bounded by a silver frame to be used as a pendant necklace, was a present from Magnus Bane to his then lover Camille Belcourt, bought for the price of a London townhouse that Magnus sold in 1857. A spell on the jewel enchanted it into reacting to, and alerting the wearer of, the presence of demons.[1]

Somehow, the necklace ended up in the possession of the Lightwoods who came to see it as a family heirloom. It was kept in the New York Institute for safekeeping.[2]

In 2016, to lure Magnus out of hiding, the Shadowhunters put the necklace into play: they offered him the return of the necklace, in exchange for a meeting. Desperate to reunite with the necklace, and despite his adviser's protests, Magnus agreed. Isabelle Lightwood wore the necklace and found herself extremely attracted to the beautiful piece of jewelry. At the meeting, Jace handed the necklace to Magnus, who fled when a Circle member attacked them. Later, however, when the Shadowhunters came to help his fellow warlocks fend of Circle members, Magnus returned the necklace to them—to Isabelle, specifically—in gratitude, acknowledging that the Lightwoods had been wearing it for years anyway.[1]

Isabelle had since always worn the necklace, and it would warn her and her companions of most demonic presence. In close proximity of the Greater Demon Azazel (and/or the demon-blooded Jonathan), the ruby shattered.[3] Isabelle, as the new weapons master of the Institute, used her access to the tools of the Institute to fix the necklace,[4] redesigning it by placing it in a cuff bracelet.[5]
