–Maia about being Turned by her ex, Awake, Arise, or be Forever Fallen

Maia Roberts is a bartender at the Hunter's Moon and one of the werewolves in Luke's pack.

Biography

Early life

Growing up, it was apparent to Maia that her brother was the favorite child. When he died, she felt that her parents had forgotten about her. Eventually, she ran away from home.[1]

Turned

TMI206 Luke & Maia 01

Luke and Maia first meet.

At one point, Maia met and began dating Jordan Kyle.

When he became possessive, she broke up with him. Jordan turned out to be a werewolf, and one night, while walking home from a date with a new boyfriend, Jordan scratched her and Turned her into one herself.[2] With no one to guide her at first, Maia wasn't fully aware of what was happening to her and lost control. In one incident, when she first Turned, Maia unconsciously hurt a girl. In the ambulance, a cop approached her and revealed to her that, like her, he was werewolf, and Maia herself only came to fully realize it then. Maia joined the New York werewolf pack, and Luke has since guided her through her new life, teaching her to control her emotions, and thus avoid involuntarily Changing.[3]

Luke eventually became the pack's alpha when he defeated Theo in battle.[4] She began bartending at the Downworlder haunt, Hunter's Moon.[5] At one point, Maia also began taking Marine Biology classes online, with hopes of transferring to Columbia University.[1]

Fighting back

When the Shadowhunter Valentine Morgenstern stole the Mortal Cup and began killing their kind, Maia felt forced to jump into action, not willing to lose the only family that she had left.[6] When her friend Gretel was abducted by the the Circle and one of the people involved, Jace, became the primary suspect for her death, Maia was among the werewolves who actively pursued Jace, despite Luke's initial instructions. Though she and a group of werewolves were able to ambush and surround him, they were stopped by Luke, forcing them, as their alpha, to submit to him—and two other Shadowhunters, one of whom was sent by the Clave, came to save Jace, whose innocence in Gretel's death had been proven.[5]

When Luke went missing after his lover's death, Maia continued to look for him though the other pack members had given up. When she overheard a vampire Simon Lewis argue with Alaric about looking for Luke, she went to him for an idea about where he could be. Simon told her about their old camping site, and though Maia refused at first, the pair headed to the woods together. Despite their kind's typical animosity towards one another, Maia and Simon got along quickly. Together, they found Luke and Maia watched, impressed, as Simon was able to calm Luke down.[3]

She and Simon went on a date shortly after. Before their date, Maia overheard Simon and Jace's conversation, from which Maia deduced that Simon was actually in love with his best friend, Clary. Maia accepted this and suggested that Simon tell Clary how he felt.[7]

Magnus hired Maia to bartend at a party thrown for the Lightwoods at his loft. There, she made amends with Jace and became the subject of Clary's magic-induced delusions involving Simon.[8] Maia also overheard them discussing how Valentine intended to use Clary to activate the Soul-Sword and destroy the Downworld. Not wanting to give them the chance, Maia decided to once again take action herself and attacked Clary but was fought off. For this, Luke chained her in Simon's boathouse and later locked her in a closet at the Jade Wolf.

Maia begged Luke to let her out and accused him of only caring about Clary and treating her unfairly. A claustrophobic and distressed Maia later Changed and broke out of the room.[9]

Luke was eventually able to calm and convince Maia to work with them, to protect Clary and fight Valentine head on instead. While outside the Institute waiting for their go signal to charge, Maia, Meliorn, and Luke were all attacked by Circle members from behind, holding them back while the others went in. The plan backfired, however, because Jace turned out to have angel blood, making him capable of activating the Sword, giving the opposite effect of what they'd anticipated from him. Those who went in and attacked were all incinerated by the Sword.[10]

Opening her heart

Eventually, Simon, who had broken up with Clary, asked Maia out on a date. Maia was reluctant to accept at first but eventually agreed.[11] Despite this, Maia feared the commitment, still reeling from the emotional trauma she got from her relationship with Jordan, but Simon did his best to reassure her.[2]

The pair continued to grow closer,[12] and Maia was infuriated at Luke's decision to kick Simon out of the boathouse for the other werewolves' actions. She convinced Simon to take the roommate offer he got shortly after,[13] realizing much later that his new roommate was her ex Jordan. After getting her bearings, Maia went to see Jordan and told him to continue his mission of looking after Simon instead of running away like he did when he Turned her.[14] When she went on a mission with Jordan and Simon, however, she found being around him unbearable and left town, asking Simon for some time to figure things out.[15]

Personality

Maia is brave, stubborn, and extremely loyal to her friends. Although she doesn't like talking about it, she struggles with trust issues due to her troubled past and often uses humor and sarcasm to mask her true feelings. She has a vulnerable side and is afraid of letting anyone come too close, but she is playful and friendly once you get to know her. She does not hesitate to put her foot down if she believes someone to be in the wrong, nor to express her distaste for Shadowhunters and the Clave. However, she can see the good in people regardless, and will make sarcastic comments while helping them or providing advice.

Maia has brown skin and thick, curly hair. She has a big scratch on the left side of her neck, and a well-hidden tattoo of a butterfly.[16]
