–Simon's usual selflessness, On Infernal Ground

Simon Lewis is a Daylighter, a rare kind of vampire able to walk in the sun. Simon was once a mundane whose life was changed when he followed his long-time best friend Clary Fairchild into her new life among the Shadow World. His loyalty and feelings for Clary are tested as he fights alongside her on an epic journey.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Simon is the only son of his single mother Elaine and is the brother of Rebecca. At a young age, he met Clary and they have been in each other's lives since, eventually becoming best friends and practically inseparable. Simon soon developed feelings for her but never got around to telling her.[1]

Being the only son in their family, Simon obliged his mother's desire for him to become a CPA, so despite wanting to pursue a career in music, Simon went to college and majored in accounting.[2] Nonetheless, he continued to pursue music in his free time, performing in a two-man band along with his friend, Maureen.

Shadow World[]

After Clary went missing on the night of her 18th birthday, Simon frantically looked for her. It was two days after that he was finally able to track her down to an abandoned church with the "Find My Friends" app. He was surprised to find her with a strange tattooed man who was initially invisible to him—Simon's first real exposure to the Shadow World. Simon tried to get Clary away from him,[1] but she refused, much to his dismay.

Clary insisted on bringing Simon along with her. With this, the man named Jace took him into the New York Institute and guided him with a rune to see past the glamour. Simon was then introduced to Isabelle Lightwood who kept him distracted while Jace took Clary to Hodge.

When Clary needed to go to the Silent City, where Simon could not enter, Isabelle volunteered to stay with him outside and look after him. When the pair decided to return to his van to listen to his music, Isabelle heard noise and left him to investigate. Shortly after, Simon was kidnapped by a vampire from inside his own van and was held hostage, with Raphael telling his friends that Simon would be returned in exchange for the Mortal Cup.[2]

During his captivity at the Hotel Dumort, Simon was kept company by the leader of the vampires, Camille Belcourt. During their time together, Simon was put under her encanto charms in her attempts to coax the location of the Mortal Cup out of him. She eventually fed on him and even offered him blood to drink. Clary and the others soon came to get him out.[3]

In the days following his rescue, Simon felt strange and antsy. He feared that he was Turning into a vampire himself—a common side effect of having a taste of blood. One evening, he returned to the hotel, only to be scared off by Raphael.[4] He returned some time after. This time, Camille let him in and assured him that he wasn't Turning into a vampire—at least, he wouldn't have if he stayed away, before she proceeded to feed on him and kill him.[5]

Raphael found him as a fledgling—half-dead and in the state of transition waiting to either be killed or buried. Raphael gave him over to Clary and the others at the Institute, letting her decide what to do: stake and kill him, or help him Turn. Clary ultimately decided to bring him back as a vampire.[6]

Life as a vampire[]

Simon had a hard time adjusting to being a vampire—even to the idea of it. He couldn't fathom the thought of drinking blood voluntarily, though his need eventually drove him to it, and he decided to stay on a diet of animal blood. In addition, he feared that he would hurt the people he loved. Needing help to adjust, Simon agreed to stay at the Hotel Dumort with Raphael's clan, which Raphael in turn agreed to because Simon served as his proof that Camille broke the Accords and Turned a mundane.[7] As a cover for his inability to return home or risk discovery, Simon told his mother that he wanted to stay at his school's dorms.[8]

Simon began to slowly adjust to his new life as a vampire. Simon remained a constant in Clary's life. When Clary needed the Book of the White and it was discovered that Camille could tell them its whereabouts, Simon helped them sneak into the hotel to get to Camille and even helped them escape with her, putting him in the clan's bad graces and forfeited his right to stay at the hotel. When Camille demanded that Simon sign a Writ of Transmutation in exchange for information on the Book, Simon agreed for Clary's sake.[9]

With no place to stay, Simon began to stay at the Institute before he was kicked out by the new head, Victor Aldertree. Luke offered him a place to stay at the Jade Wolf, but Simon was eventually forced out by the other werewolves, who despised vampires. Simon began staying at the boathouse by the restaurant.[10]

After an incident where a vampire den where vampires were feeding on mundanes—an act that is illegal and against the Accords—was discovered, Aldertree met with Simon, forcing him to find out who was responsible for starting the den. With Raphael as the head, Aldertree suspected him after Simon apparently unintentionally implied that Raphael was involved, putting pressure on Raphael to look for Camille, who was in fact the one responsible. For Simon's part in getting Raphael in trouble, Raphael demanded that he find Camille,[11] particularly through their connection as a vampire Camille Turned, whereas most of the other vampires she'd sired had already gone against Raphael.[8]

Simon approached the High Warlock of Brooklyn Magnus Bane for help looking for Camille. Together, they Portaled to Camille's home in India, where Simon finally learned to use the encanto—performing it on a snake that attacked him—and found a sealed box that Magnus suggested Simon keep. Magnus then told Simon that he would help him, not only look for Camille but to support him while he tried to find himself and where he belonged.[11]

Raphael continued to pressure Simon, even threatening the life of his mother, to look for Camille.[8] When Raphael found out about the sealed box he'd retrieved from India, Raphael revealed that it contained Camille's grave dirt, which they were able to use to summon Camille. With Camille delivered to the Clave, the two vampires got Aldertree off their backs, and Raphael stopped bothering Simon about it.[12]

Missing his mother, Simon tried to move back home with his mother, but when his blood supply was thrown out by his sister, Simon felt forced to finally tell Elaine about being a vampire. Though she did not believe him at first, she caught him feeding on a rat out of thirst.[13] Scared of how she might react, Simon immediately called Raphael, who made her forget what she had just seen with an encanto.[14]

Simon supported Clary after Jocelyn's death,[13] and when Luke went mysteriously missing, looked for him even though his pack had given up. Simon then met a member of Luke's pack, Maia Roberts, who remained loyal to him and continued looking for him. Simon got the idea that he might be at their old camping site, and together, they went to the woods and found him, barely in control of his actions. Simon was able to calm Luke, impressing even Maia, whom Simon almost immediately bonded with.[14]

Simon went out with Maia once—which started off as a bad date because of inappropriate dating advice from Jace—and Maia advised him to just tell Clary how he felt about her.[15] With the sudden courage and push to do so, he met with Clary and admitted his love for her. Clary reciprocated with a kiss, and the pair began dating.[16]

When Clary's life was put at risk by the discovery that she could activate the Soul-Sword, Simon and Jace teamed up to protect Clary. When she was taken by Valentine, they were able to track her, but Simon was kidnapped instead while trying to protect her.[17] Valentine used him as leverage to lure Clary to the Institute, where he intended to activate the Soul-Sword. Valentine made matters urgent by slitting his throat. Jace, in the form of Clary, found him and let him drink his blood—unbeknownst to them, Jace just fed him pure angel blood.

On their way to destroy the Sword, they found Clary being forced by Valentine to touch the Sword. Simon and Jace intervened, and after knocking out the guards, and Valentine, Jace held the Sword, unwittingly activating it instead of destroying it as they expected his touch to do. When Downworlders stormed the Institute, Valentine wielded the Sword and used its power against them. All of the Downworlders within the Institute were killed—save for Simon, surprising him and Clary. Later, while mourning the deaths of the Downworlders, including Alaric, Simon found himself not perishing under sunlight. Though he did not yet know the reason why, he eagerly rushed to tell Clary by pulling her outside in broad daylight, and the pair gleefully kissed for the good news.[18]

Daylighter[]

Not knowing the true gravity of his ability to walk in the sun, Simon happily embraced his new life, signing up with NYU for their music degree, while still holding a minor in accounting for his mother, as a start. Word quickly spread, attracting envy from other Downworlders. Simon first learned from Raphael that he was what is referred to as a Daylighter, legendary and almost mythical, and Raphael tried to coax the details of his transformation out of Simon but failed.[19]

Simon grew paranoid, thinking Raphael would strike to force information out of him and decided to approach Isabelle, whom he found out had been seeing Raphael until recently. Isabelle's approach involved making Raphael aware that Simon could get to his younger sister, an old woman named Rosa, any time—a tactic which simply angered Raphael further. Raphael Portaled to Jade Wolf with his followers, in broad daylight, upon hearing it and threatened to execute him when Simon hid in the sun, announcing to those who had been unaware that he was a Daylighter.[20] This revelation created a following of vampires who wanted to be a part of the Daylighter's clan, informing him of a legend that prophesied his arrival. Simon insisted that he did not want to lead a clan and sent them away.[21]

For a while, it seemed that his relationship with Clary was going steady. When Clary and Jace were called to the Seelie Court, Simon insisted on accompanying them. The Seelie Queen accepted his presence; unbeknownst to him, because of his Daylighter status, the Queen had also taken interest in him and hoped he would come with the pair. Privately, the Queen extended a request for friendship and alliance, offering to mentor him in music and be treated like royalty in her Court if he allied himself with her in dark times against the Nephilim. Simon insisted he was not that big of a deal and avoided accepting the request. The Queen told him that she would wait, and warned him that Shadowhunters would always choose their own over Downworlders, which he emotionally denied.

Dark path[]

When Simon tried to rush out of the Court with Jace and Clary, they were stopped by the Queen and her vitis veritas—enchanted vines that obey only her. Their departure was further stalled because they unknowingly killed beings of the Court: the gnats at the kill tree they'd passed upon entering the Court earlier. The Queen demanded justice and ordered her vines to constrict Simon and Jace's bodies tighter. She offered to rescind her call if they, particularly Clary, participated in a game: they would be freed if Clary gets the kiss she most desired. Clary went on to kiss Simon but had no effect; the Queen informed her that she could lie to herself, but the vines were not fooled, so Clary kissed Jace, which promptly freed them both. Devastated, Simon left.[22] Clary tried to explain their situation to Simon, but Simon acknowledged Clary's lingering feelings for Jace and broke up with her.[23]

Simon eventually recovered with help from Maia,[24] whom he then started dating.[25][26] Meanwhile, the Queen continued to try and coax Simon into an alliance, and he continued to refuse.[27] To get to him, the Queen kidnapped Maia, under the guise that it was to offer her an alliance. To free her and Luke, Simon surrendered to the Queen's terms. At a party celebrating their victory against Valentine, Simon took the opportunity to subtly bid his goodbyes to Clary and Maia without telling them about his deal with the Queen, before returning to the Queen to fulfill his side of the bargain.[28]

Being cursed

As part of the deal with the Seelie Queen, Simon would be gifted with the Mark of Cain which granted him absolute protection against anything. While he originally tried to get rid of it, he soon discovered why the Queen gave it to him. He then used the Mark to banish the demon mother Lilith back to Edom, before finally removing the Mark with the help of Izzy.

The road ahead

Upon getting rid of the Mark of Cain, Simon would start to assist the Shadowhunters more in their missions. Through these experiences, Simon’s bond with Izzy would grow stronger and he and Jace would also start to bond. When Clary’s brother Jonathan was brought back to life, Simon would assist the Shadowhunters in breaking Clary’s connection to him. In the end they were successful in freeing Clary and Simon and Izzy both realized they had feelings for each other.

Dating Izzy and new job

Simon would admit his feelings to Izzy, but after they had their first kiss they were forced to be separated as Izzy couldn’t touch Simon due to the Heavenly fire in her system. The group traveled to Edom to rescue Magnus and Izzy and bring them home. In the process they managed to remove the fire from Izzy and destroy Edom by killing Lilith. Once they got back home, Simon and Izzy picked back up where they left off by going back to Simon’s apartment and having sex. The next morning they made a promise to each other to always be at each others’ side and work through the hard times in their relationship. They attended Alec’s and Magnus’ wedding together where they encountered Raphael for one last time, and he told them that he was happy the two of them were together. One year after Clary was stripped of her memories of the Shadow World and Simon, Simon and Izzy had become an extremely powerful couple and had both been handed new jobs at the institute. Simon and Jace had also become good friends and now often train together.

Personality and traits[]

Simon is intelligent and talented, especially with music. He's the first to find humor in any situation, often resorting to jokes to lighten the mood, out of nervousness, or to make a reference. He grows talkative when he's nervous, which is often, and isn't ashamed to admit his own weaknesses. Simon is unassuming and self-deprecating.

He has a good relationship with his mother and sister, as well as close ties to his Jewish heritage. Simon can be a good friend to anyone who reaches out to him. He is willing to put his fears aside to protect those dear to him, repeatedly expressing fear or unwillingness to do something only to proceed when he learns it would help someone he cares about. He prefers avoiding conflict at all costs, but will not hesitate to throw himself into the fray for the sake of someone else. He is not a bitter person and forgives those he loves quickly, although it is more difficult for him to forget if someone threatens or hurts his family.

If Simon gets into a fight and is trying to protect himself or someone he cares about, he will do what he has to do without hesitation. Such as inflicting serious damage on his opponent and even taking a life. This is shown when Jonathan Morgenstern was going to kill Izzy and Simon ran up and bit him really hard on the neck, despite knowing that it would have hurt Clary as well. He also brutally killed fellow vampire Quinn out of fear for his own life, which visibly disturbed Clary, Luke and Raphael; as none of them knew that Simon was capable of being that ruthless.

Simon used to wear glasses as a mundane but lost the need for them after being Turned into a vampire.

Physical appearance[]

Simon is a handsome well groomed young man with a casual style of clothing. he has dark hair that is always spiked up in some way, and he has tan skin. Since becoming a vampire, his physique has been biologically altered and he now possesses an extremely ripped and athletic body without the need to workout. His body is in such good shape, that both Clary and Izzy have had a hard time hiding their attraction to it.

Skills and abilities[]

  • Encanto: Simon has the vampire ability to mesmerize or hypnotize mundanes, and even animals, and force them to do whatever he tells them to do as well as altering their memories. He can mind control humans, animals and other Downworlders, but it is unknown if he could control Shadowhunters.
  • Heightened senses: After his Turning, his vision improved and he no longer needed glasses. He can also smell blood from a distance. His hearing and sight have also been enhanced to where Simon can clearly hear things at a distance and see things as if through a microscope. Like all Down Worlders, Simon can also see Shadowhunters and their runes even when they are glamoured.
  • Superhuman strength: Simon became physically stronger as a vampire. His stamina, agility, and movement also improved.
  • Superhuman speed: Simon can run at speeds comparable to Shadowhunters. His reflexes are similarly heightened.
  • Superhuman survivability: As a vampire, Simon can survive things that would easily kill humans. He has survived having his throat cut open by Valentine, falling from great heights and being shot repeatedly in the chest by Luke.
  • Immortality: As a vampire, Simon is immortal. However, this does not make him invincible; he is in fact prone to death by fire, among others.
  • Immunity to the sun: After drinking Jace's blood a Shadowhunter with additional, pure angel blood—Simon became impervious to the typical vampire weakness to the sun and thus gained the ability to freely walk in daylight. His blood also protected him from the power of the Soul-Sword.[18]

  • Skilled combatant: Simon has been shown to possess good instincts and reflexes in armed combat. He has learned to use his enhanced speed and reflexes to swiftly dodge and block attacks giving him the edge in many fights.
  • Escrima-Sticks master: After training with Jace Herondale, Simon’s stick-fighting skills were improved as he was able to dodge and coordinate at incoming attacks correctly.
  • Skilled musician: Simon has shown skill in multiple facets of music; he sings, plays the guitar and keyboard, and also writes and composes songs.

  • Mark-granted invincibility: After being branded by the Seelie Queen with a mysterious mark on his forehead, anyone who attempts to hurt Simon is pushed back by a strong, invisible force. With his new powers, Simon became so incredibly dangerous, that Lilith the mother of demons became afraid of him and refused to go anywhere near him. The Mark has been removed through the required Seelie ritual.

  • Relationships[]

    Romance[]

Clary and Simon have been best friends since they were children. Simon developed romantic feelings for the girl, but never confessed them due to being shy. When Clary first realized her identity as a Shadowhunter, Simon was quick to follow her into the Shadow World and brave through all the dangers.

Eventually, he admitted his feelings to Clary, and they became a couple. They later realized Clary was still in love with Jace, and they were better off as friends. Even though Simon was heart broken, he and Clary promised each other to stay each other’s best friend and that’s what they’ve done.

Simon met Maia in the boat shed next to the Jade Wolf. They went on a searching trip to find Luke, and bonded through the experience. After one date, Maia realized he had feelings for Clary and persuaded him to admit his feelings.

After his relationship with Clary failed, Simon bonded with Maia and eventually started dating her. Things were working out well until her ex-boyfriend, Jordan Kyle, reappeared in her life as Simon's protector. When Simon blamed himself for Clary's "death", Maia was there to comfort him. They broke up and became friends again.

Simon was instantly attracted to Isabelle the moment he saw her activate a rune on her arm. Isabelle flirted with him, and found him charming as a mundane. After Simon became a vampire, their friendship improved. They were there for each other throughout all the hard times.

After Clary disappeared, Isabelle and Simon went to find Cain to ask about the Mark of Cain. They made a pact to stay single together, Simon even taught Isabelle to pinky swear. The Seelie Queen later had Simon's Mark erased since it served its purpose; the process nearly killed him. Isabelle fed him her blood to save him. Eventually, they both realized they had developed feelings for one another and decided to pursue it after much struggle. One year after Clary lost her memories of everyone, Isabelle was named the head of the New York institute and Simon was made a Downworlder Deputy of the institute. With their new job positions, Simon and Isabelle have become an even stronger couple and have truly fallen in love with each other. Their new jobs also benefited their relationship status, as Isabelle is the head of the institute and Simon is the second in command, making them the ultimate power couple.

  • "Royal Blue"

  • A running gag on the show that has been brought up by some characters is that Simon often gets kidnapped.
  • Differences from the books:
    • Simon is around two years older than his book counterpart and, instead of being a high school student, is already in college.
    • In the books, Simon is not friends with Maureen, a groupie and admirer of Simon, and their band consisted of 4-5 members while Simon was a part of it.
    • Simon's sire on the show is Camille, while it was Raphael in the books.
    • The Mark of Cain was forcefully placed on him by the Seelie Queen, while in the books, he'd asked Clary for the Mark.
